6 LGBTIQ+ In Tech Communities to Watch

For this year’s Summer of Pride, an opportunity to raise awareness around the LGBTIQ+ community and a celebration of the Stonewall Riots of 1969, we want to shine a light on resources & communities who push for diversity in the Tech workplace.

Heritage of Pride Parade passes Stonewall, New York City, June 25, 1989.

According to Stuart B. Cameron, founder and CEO of UHLALA Group, the tech world is not as open as one would imagine and it’s important to advocate for bringing marginalised communities together. A Blind’s report of 2020 showed that 86% of technologists felt that their companies were safe places to work for LGBTQ+ employees, however between 64-76% of these employees actually felt safe.

As a reaction, many big brands are contributing to rainbow capitalism by incorporating queerness into their marketing and products. While it probably stems out of good intentions, it capitalises on the purchasing power of some queer people rather than actually supporting their communities, which is inherently exploitative.

That being said, it’s time to stop talking about awareness and start taking action. Here are 6 LGBTIQ+ in Tech communities you can support and become a part of.

Out in Tech

Out in Tech is the world’s largest non-profit community of LGBTQ+ tech leaders with a global network of 40.000 members. They bring communities together through local and digital events, provide scholarships and support their members in networking and career development.

Proudr

Proudr is the world’s first app that aims to build a business networking community for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transsexual and queer people in Germany. They launched in 2019 and have since then grew steadily to a community of over 3,200 people and 70 LGBTIQ + friendly companies.

Unicorns in Tech

Unicorns in Tech is a Berlin-founded LGBTIQ+ community and network of over 4000 international members who are passionate about technology. They host monthly get-togethers to network within the industry and as a legacy of the Berlin LGBT+ Tech Week, they now organise the Unicorns In Tech Summit.

Queer Code

Queer Code is a non-profit community of queer coders who organise local meetups in Berlin, London, Scotland & Yorkshire. Their mission is to create a safe environment to network for queer people working in jobs related to software development.

Lesbians Who Tech

Lesbians Who Tech & Allies is an inclusive, badass community who strive to increase the visibility of women, POC, queer and trans people in the tech field. Their yearly global Pride Summit (this year not IRL) consists of 40.000 techies in over 100 countries.
